Did you know  . . . . . . that Granny Smith may be the best known apple of all ?

Granny Smith

Large sized fruit. Uniform green color with a shiny gloss. The flesh is whitish with a fine firm texture. Its flavour is very tart without being sour. Excellent for apple sauce and juice. Good thirst quencher. Preferred apple for Waldorf Salads.

Rumour has it that around 1850, an elderly lady called Maria Anne Smith discarded some apples behind her house in the Ryde district of New South Wales, Australia. From these the first tree is supposed to have sprouted.
