. . . that the sub-variety known as Royal Gala came after Queen Elizabeth II declared her preference for it ?

Gala (Royal Gala)
Small sized fruit. Bright orange-red striping over yellow color (sometimes solid orange red on one half). The cream-colored flesh is incredibly sweet and crisp. Fragrant when fresh but after some time in storage both aroma and taste will dissipate. Check for aroma at the time of purchase. The small size makes the Gala a perfect apple for lunchboxes. Also good for drying. Royal Gala apples are darker red in color and have a finer textured flesh.
Raised by J. H. Kidd of Greytown, New Zealand, by crossing Golden Delicious and his own Kidd's Orange Red. The work was done in the 1920s, but the apple wasn't named and introduced until 1965.
