Black Seeded Grapes
Black seeded grape varieties are easily recognized by their compact bunches and large berries. The most popular varieties are Alphonse Lavallee, Bonheur and La Rochelle. The latter two are most true to their sort by being indeed almost black. Alphonse Lavallee differs in color by appearing deep blue. All of them are deliciously sweet and very juicy. Excellent for dessert.
Many black seeded varieties originate from Alphonse Lavallee. It was first registered by a nursery in New Orleans (U.S.) in 1860. Via Argentina it was introduced into South Africa, where it has been successfully grown since 1928.
