Lemon
Medium sized oval shaped citrus fruit with a zesty flavor, which is highly prized for its juice. There are three main types of lemons. One is the Lisbon lemon, which has a thin skin and plenty of piquantly sour flesh. The slightly larger Eureka has a thicker skin than the Lisbon and is the most sour lemon. The Meyer lemon is actually an orange hybrid. They are almost round and have a thin skin. Considered the "sweetest" lemon.
The true birthplace of the lemon is unknown, though it is believed to be somewhere in north-western India. Apparently, the Romans brought lemons to Italy in the second century AD. From there, the Arabs took them to Spain and North Africa. Around 1000 A.D. they were cultivated in China and some Mediterranean countries (which are now known as Iraq and Egypt). In 1493 Christopher Columbus carried lemon seeds to Hispaniola from where the Spaniards spread them throughout other New World countries.
