Lime
Small roundish bright green citrus variety with a pungent flavour. The most common species of limes are the smaller West Indian type (Citrus aurantiifolia). This primary citrus is also known as Mexican or Key lime. The larger Tahitian type (Citrus latifolia) is also called Persian lime. It is actually a hybrid between the West Indian lime and Citron Medica). Lime juice is used in cooking and in drinks. Lime extracts and essential oils are used as ingredients in perfumes and cleansing products.
The lime is a native of the East Indian archipelago and eventually reached the Asiatic mainland . It is believed that it was introduced into the Mediterranean region by way of Persia. Apparently it was cultivated on Djerba, an island off the coast of Tunisia. From there it was taken by Portuguese traders to Brazil.
