Satsuma
Oval shaped citrus with a hollow bottom. Light orange colored skin. The bright orange flesh is “pebbly” in texture and full of juice, without any seeds. The flavor is mildly sweet. The fruit peels and segments easily. Being an “easy-peeler” the fruit does not store very well.
The Satsuma Mandarin is believed to have originated in Japan probably in the mid-sixth century A.D. It was named in 1878 by the wife of the US Minister to Japan, General Van Valkenberg. Satsuma being the former name of the prefecture now known as Kogoshima on Kyushu Island in western Japan.
