Navel
Navel oranges are large to extra large round citrus fruit. They are characterized by a typical small secondary fruit growth at the base of the flower end. The medium-thick skin is of uniform deep yellow or orange color. The seedless, tender flesh has an exquisite texture and mildly sweet flavour. The juice is pale orange. Navels are ideal for fresh eating because they peel and separate easily.
The Navel orange, so named for its "belly button" at the blossom end, was discovered in the 1820's as an unusual growth on a Salata tree in Salvador, Brazil, but is believed to have originated in China.
