. . . that pears can vary from 60 g to well over 300 g in size?

Bon Rouge
A large, rounded pear with a striking red color. As its name suggests, the most striking aspect of the Bon Rouge is its color which when properly ripened, transforms from a blood red to an appealing blush of pale crimson on a yellow background. The taste complements this appeal admirably. It is very sweet and juicy when fully ripe. The Bon Rouge, however, is a delicate pear and needs to be stored carefully. It is best purchased when still firm and allowed to ripen at home at room temperature. Avoid excessive handling as the skin easily develops scratch marks.
Bon Rouge is a red pear variety, derived from a spontaneous bud mutation of a green pear cultivar called Bon Chretien. Bon Rouge trees sometimes revert to produce green fruits and this phenomenon is seen either as branches of green fruits on a tree of red fruit, or as "harlequin" fruits which are half red, half green.
