Did you know  . . . . . . that American Bartlett variety was originally known in England as Williams?

Williams Bartlett

Probably the best known and most widely grown pear throughout the world. Medium to large bell-shaped fruit. Smooth, pale green skin with occasional red blush that turns pale golden yellow during ripening. White, very smooth, juicy flesh. Sweet with a hint of acidity and characteristic musky flavour. It is not only one of the most popular dessert pears but also the most widely used pear for canning, because it holds its shape well when baked or poached.

Originated before 1770 in the garden of a schoolmaster called Mr Wheeler in Aldermaston, Berkshire, UK. His successor in the garden, Mr Stair, sent grafts to Richard Williams, a nurseryman at Turnham Green, whose name was given to the variety in 1814. While visiting London, Enoch Bartlett discovered Williams pears and brought them to America where they were renamed after him.
