SoilThe apples and pears of PAI – Fruempac are organic. Therefore no chemical fertilizer, pesticides or herbicides end up in the soil. As a result, the soil is rich in micro-organisms that create a living soil. Roberto and his colleagues have started using compost a few years ago; this improves the quality of the soil tremendously. The positive effects of composting are numerous. Soil structure is improved, creating a better plant root environment. Soil water management is improved, with better drainage and reduced erosion and runoff. As a result the soil is more resistant to drought or flooding. Biodiversity is also greatly improved. Soil-borne diseases are suppressed. More organic matter is stored in the soil, that compensates for greenhouse gas emissions. In short, good composting brings life.
