Bird on the apple treeThe integration of animals in fruit orchards is often limited to bird and insect populations as the use of livestock has its challenges.  Agro Roca has preserved about 9 hectares in its natural state as a natural wildlife habitat near the Rio Negro.  This area is home to a wide variety of plant species, which provide food and shelter for small mammals, birds and many insects.  As an entomologist ,   Enrique enjoys spending time in his “little paradise” to observe bees, wasps, caterpillars, butterflies and all kinds of other little creatures.  Other people enjoy it more for the many bird varieties  that they can hear there but very seldom catch sight of.

Enrique has identified a particular wasp that preys on insect pests in the orchard.  Thus, the area makes a great teaching environment to educate his staff about insect pests and their predators.  The more knowledgeable his staff is about insect life in the orchard, the easier it is to monitor any possible attacks and prevent them.
