Apples in the sunAgroRoca tries to reduce its fossil fuel use wherever possible. In the housing facilities provided to the workers on the farm, Agroroca recently installed two solar pumps for the heating system. In the other houses, the water is warmed by a wood stove, which uses farm waste. AgroRoca also installed some solar pumps that pump water into the irrigation channels.
The apples, pears and plums are certified organic, so no chemical fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides are used, which saves a lot of energy. In conventional farming, these inputs are responsible for major energy use; up to 80% of the total. The fruit is transported to Europe by ship, which is the most energy efficient transport method.
