Hi, I am Gerasimos Karantinos, organic citrus grower

I am the founder and president of BioNet West Hellas, an association of organic growers in western Greece. Most of our growers are located in the provinces of Aetolia-Acarnania on the north side of the Gulf of Corinth and Achaea and Ilia on the south side. Like most of Greece, western Greece is a mountainous region, but it enjoys an abundance of rivers, lakes and other wetlands. We grow all kinds of organic citrus fruits for Nature & More.

The area is known for a typical Mediterranean climate - with hot summers and mild winters - which makes it ideal for the cultivation of citrus fruit. In its different soil types and micro-climates, other crops such as olive, kiwi, tomatoes, melon and, of course, Greek honey and wine are grown with equal success. We employ seven trained agronomists who assist our growers with organic practices.

Most of our growers operate small farms of between 5 and 25 hectares. Many of them changed to organic agriculture methods in the 1990’s when BioNet West Hellas was founded. Since citrus fruit is an important export crop, packing and shipping facilities were established in the port town of Patra, less than an hour away from the associated growers. The region is interspersed with rugged mountain ranges and extended natural forests which provide shelter for several species of rare birds and mammals.

About taste and quality:
"Our oranges, after collection, are washed with pure water only and dried with air. We don't spray any chemicals on them so they are safe to eat including the peel! You can definitely use them for baby food, if you like."

Thank you for the great fruit I just ate! It tasted wonderfully here on a cold morning i Denmark - keep up the good work! And this webpage is a fun idea - I just miss a little map so I can see the proximity of where the oranges were grown. That would be cool.

map!

Hi JP,

Actually there is a map, if you go to the "growers" section you will find a map there. Zoom in on Greece and there you will find Karantinos!

best regards

Wonderful oranges, and fortunately one of them had a little sticker... I really like that I can so easily get information about what I eat. One of these oranges every day will keep me going through winter. Thank you!

Cheers!

Just ate some of your delicious oranges and noticed the sticker which led me here. It's really nice to make the connection with the origins of the food. We really do need some bright citrus fruit up here during these dark months. :)

thank you

The supermarkets here in Namsos, a little town in middle Norway, were we are spending our Christmas holidays with our family, unfortunately are almost devoid of organic products -- this year even worse than last as the second supermarket offering at least a basic range of organic products closed in autumn. In order to survive we ordered a huge fruit basket from http://www.okomat.no/. Eventually it turned out that this regional organic delivery service for economic reasons discontinued delivery to Namsos. Fortunately my brother-in-law, on its way here, dropped by and picked the basket up. Now we are enjoying an abundance of your delicious oranges. Thank you for having saved Christmas for us!

Fantastic!

It is nice to see the face behind the product...but more than a product , that's a way of building the future with a philosophy.

If everybody was on organic/bio farming, many problems of the world would be solved...of course, it has to be rewarded in condieration of the work, and not by speculation..

That's why this kind of production has to keep its independance from corporate groups willing to impose low cost and low qualities process...loering the social network behind it.

Your fruits rae excellent Mr Karantinos....so good that the narancia can be eaten as such...and not even more expansive than a chemics orange !! ;)

Best wishes for 2011

Christophe
