Hi, I'm Andres Vergara and I grow organic kiwi's for Nature & More in Chile. Our company is called Comfrut and most of our farms are located around Chillan, south of Santiago in the Bio-Bio region, in Chile's central valley. Due to previous volcanic activities this region has some of the most fertile soils in Chile. Thus it is not surprising that Chillan has become an important centre for agricultural production. The main products from this region include wine, grain, fruit and vegetables.

All Comfrut farms are individually owned and managed by their owners with the assistance of qualified agronomists. Apart from giving general advice with regards to basic management practices or specific advice in relation to new crops, these agronomists provide valuable input when it comes to the organic practices. Since organic growing is an ongoing learning process these interchanges are vital to the success of Comfrut farms. In addition to hands-on advice, Comfrut also publishes information leaflets on a regular basis in which organic practices are discussed from time to time.

Organic products from Comfrut farms have been exported to the United States and Europe since 1991, when the first Comfrut grower, Jose Hidalgo, was certified organic. This particular farm has played an important role in educating other organic growers in Chile and is frequently visited by university students and featured on national television.

Hallo liebe Freunde in Chile,

wir kaufen Eure KIWIS immer beim "Lebe-Gesund-Vesand"
in Deutschland.

Hello,
in fact, I can't control if what you're saying and showing is authentic and I feel a bit uncertain, but I'd like to have confidence and thank you for the effort you're doing to make things transparent and clear .. and, most important, to work for more and more respectfullness towards the whole creation
.. all the best, Mathias

Thanks Mathias

Hi Mathias,
Thanks for your email. I can assure you that the kiwi you bought is from Comfruit and that the information on the website is correct. By making things transparent through Nature & More, we want to empower consumers like yourself to make informed decisions. Your reaction and the reactions from others is extremely motivating for us and confirms we are on the right track ! So a big "merci vielmal" from Andres and all of us at Nature & More

Bonjour,
=> vos employés gagnent-ils correctement leur vie ? Sont-ils syndiqués ?
=>avez-vous réfléchi à l'empreinte carbone ?
=>votre femme est-elle heureuse ?

saludos

Jose, Holanda

Hi!
It is the first time I tasted your kiwi and I didn't like them. They were not sweet at all, in the contrary they tasted bitter. In fact I' ll not eat them, I'll through them away. I bought it from a supermarket in Athens and I was wandering where these kiwi come from, if they are not organic or someone has put something for the transportation.
Its good to see so nice comments about your products but in my plate they did not reach good.

Unos kiwis estupendos

Hola

I've just enjoyed one of your delicious kiwis - delivered to me by a nearby farmer where I subscribe for a weekly box of organic vegetable and fruit.
It is very nice to be able to 'visit' the farmer - and this leeds to me being interested in knowing a little more.
I've seen yellow kiwis in some shops - do you grow such kiwis as well?
I wonder about the travel to Europe - how long does it take?.

Response to your questions

Avatar Posted by Michael Wilde at Aug 16, 2010 09:52 AM
Dear Ina,

Many thanks for your comments and questions regarding organic kiwi’s.

On behalf of our grower Andres, I can answer your questions.

1 I've seen yellow kiwis in some shops - do you grow such kiwis as well?

The yellow kiwi also known as gold kiwi is a variety called Hort 16A which was developed by the New Zealand kiwi company Zespri. They have exclusive rights regarding this variety and therefore are the only ones who sell this. The variety that Andres cultivates is the common Hayward variety

I wonder about the travel to Europe - how long does it take?.
The kiwis are transported by boat only and this takes around 21 days.

Hope this answers your questions !

All the best

Michaël

Yellow kiwis - yuk

Avatar Posted by Ina, Denmark at Aug 16, 2010 07:35 PM
Dear Michaël.

Thank you for your fast response.
Being an urban dweller I was surprised to learn that also yellow kiwis are the subject of exclusive rights - I believe such methods are going down the slippery slope!
I strongly hope noone restricts organic green kiwis...!

I'll pass on the message to friends and family - buying kiwis should be a green and organic business - buying yellow kiwis means opposing freedom, justice and solidarity!

Andres and Michaël - keep up all your good work - I wish you all the best!

Best Regards,
Ina

Je suis désappointé par l'utilisation d'une étiquette PLASTIQUE pour nature and more, vraiment regrettable !

Avatar Posted by Noor Mestelgier at Aug 09, 2010 02:07 PM
Dear Ms. Marunet,

We appreciate your concern and share your disappointment regarding the plastic label. Unfortunately, our fruit is sourced from various countries and it is difficult to always obtain compostable labels. However, we can inform you that all our packaging and about half the labels are indeed bio-degradable. We are proud of this achievement and do not know of any company which is as committed as our suppliers are. It is only a question of time when all our materials will be biodegradable and we hope we can count on your patience.

Bedankt!
