Hi, I'm Edgar Corrales and I grow organic pineapples in Costa Rica. Our company, Ecopiñas del Arenal, is located in Northern Costa Rica (Muelle, San Carlos) in the vicinity of the imposing and active Arenal Volcano. The mission of the company (since the farm was established in 2008) is to produce high-quality organic pineapples, protecting the environment, advancing biodiversity, and contributing to the communities in which it operates.

The farm operates on land that was predominantly pasture areas before being planted with pineapples. The land is rented from local land holders who are key members of the surrounding community and important stakeholders for the organic operation, as well as stewards for their land.

Ecopiñas (part of Dole Fresh Fruit International) currently has a production area of 100 hectares of organic pineapples. Non-cultivated areas, such as wetlands and forest areas, represent 40 % of the total area, and are protected under Costa Rican legislation. The farm has established buffer zones around these areas, as well as along creeks and streams which have been planted with local tree species. Among these is the Mountain Almond which is a key habitat for the highly endangered Green Parrot (for more information read the enclosed story).

Some of the farm’s unique agricultural practices include a soil conservation and management plan, an on-farm composting facility using pineapple crowns as one of the main inputs, and a research department to study plant nutrition and production and the use of effective microorganisms in compost and soil.

ananas/pine apple

i have bought in La Haya(The Hague, Den Haag) Netherlands 2 pineapples (ananas) from yr plantage thru Aldi supermarkt, delivered by eosta waddinxveen. I think for about 5 euro or less. I am not interested in the price/quality rate; I only like to know how to judge whether the ananas is ripe or not for consumption. They look very greeny and feel concrete like hard. I have no experience eating ananas but from cans!! thanks in advance, for the advice.

pineapple comsuption tips.

Dear consumer , thank you for your interest in pineapple consumption. We would like to clarify basically 2 points , first once the pineapple is harvested it is ready for consumption so whenever you see a pineapple at the market it has been previously selected at the farm as already ripen, and secondly in the case of organic pineapples you will always find it greener than conventional since there is no application of a degreening agent, what this degreening agent does for the conventional pineapples is to bring together the internal and external color of the fruit.

hoe to know ripeness

thank you very much. I thought a green ananas/pine apple is not ripe for consumption, now I know eco-ananasses remain green even when ripe, i am going to eat them now.immediately...

Tolle Ananas

Danke!

Price of your Organic Pineapples at retail shops in Italy

Avatar Posted by Valerio Costenaro_Italy at Mar 31, 2011 08:36 PM
Hello.

I have just eaten with plesant taste a Bio / Organic Pineapple Code 761 from Natureandmore
(Eosta Waddinxveen Verp.NL KC8 117 Checked by: NL-BIO-01 SKAL 1013)
produced by Ecopiñas del Arenal S.A.
I bought it from a local Bio shop here in Italy (Vicenza district- North-East).
The Weight of the pineapple was Kg.1,412 and I paid the price of EUR-7,20 (seven euros and 20 cents: at the price of EUR-5,10 per Kg ).
I feel this price may be too expensive even for an organic excellent pineapple.

I would very much appreciate your comments on this price issue.

My thanks and my compliments for your achievements.

Best regards to all of you.

Valerio

Buenas noches.
Muchas Gracias.
