It is a general principle of organic farming that every living organism should be held in high regard: from the tiniest micro-organism living in the soil to the mightiest tree towering above it. For this reason, every link in the organic food supply chain is geared towards maintaining and, wherever possible, increasing the diversity of plants and animal Consequently, one of the most positive side effects of organic agriculture is that it encourages and stimulates bio diversity. EcopiƱas is a company that is actively stimulating the biodiversity in Costa Rica and is stimulating the local flora and fauna. The farm has established buffer zones around the natural areas, as well as around creeks and streams and have planted local tree species. Among these is the Mountain Almond which is a key habitat for the highly endangered Green Parrot. The green parrot (Ara ambigua) is an endangered bird in Costa Rica. They live in very tall trees (almendro Amarillo) which have been cut indiscriminately during the last 30 years due to the beauty of the wood. The farm has some of these trees and has been planting more to bring the bird and its habitat back. As a matter of fact, 40% of the land is under natural forest or habitat and is being protected by law and by our own internal environmental policy. The protected areas surrounding the farms also serve as home to Howler monkeys, deer, frogs, and birds, among others. A flora and fauna inventory has been undertaken by a biologist to document the biodiversity in the forests and riparian areas around the farm. |
