In 2007, the company set up a biodiversity programme for the area focussing on:
• The local Shea Tree (protection and planting programmes). The Shea Tree, is a tree indigenous to Africa, occurring in many West African countries including Ghana. The shea fruit consists of a thin, tart, nutritious pulp that surrounds a relatively large, oil-rich seed from which is extracted shea butter. The shea tree is a traditional food plant in Africa. It has been claimed that that the tree has potential to improve nutrition, boost food security, foster rural development and support sustainable land care.
• Non Burning Areas (to conserve traditional species).
• Boundary Planting (to replace fences, preserving natural species, dust filters, wood for cooking).
• Individual / Group woodlot (to reduce the negative effect of the harmattan winds, storms and dust.
• Identifying local tree species that are fast growing and have a good coppicing ability.
