Hi, I'm Andres Nuñez and I grow pineapples in Costa Rica.
Globally Responsible spacer Free from Pesticides and GMOs

Hi, I'm Andres Nuñez and I grow organic-pineapples for Nature & More in Costa Rica. Our company is called Finca La Virgen, after the nearest village. Thank you for buying our fruit!

We are located in the valley next to Volcano Poas, an active volcano. This area is characterized by tropical cloud forests interlaced with streams and waterfalls. This region is ideal for organic pineapple production. With an average temperature of 23 degree Celsius and no extreme fluctuations, we could not be in a better location. With regular rainfalls throughout the year totaling more than 5 meters we have no need for irrigation. Our deep volcanic soils are also an important asset, particular as the top layer is of a sandy clay, which allows water to drain easily. This is very important when growing pineapple, because the root system is very susceptible to decay when waterlogged.

Finca La Virgen is part of Dole Organic. It was founded in 1991 and comprises of more than 1,200 hectares. About 700 hectares are primarily planted with pineapples and few papayas, which are laid out in geometric patterns throughout the valley. About 450 hectares are set aside as a conservation area and 30 hectares along the riverbanks have recently been re-forested with native trees. The aim is to set an example in sustainable agriculture by demonstrating that organic pineapple production can be applied on a commercial scale without compromising the local flora and fauna.

How 'bout taste?

"Best pineapple ever! In my family we all agree that the pineapple from you was the best we have ever tried. Keep up the good work! Best regards Anders."

Hi Andres.

my name is John ... my friend, a (Japanese lady) staying with me, is Name Ami.

I bought one of your sweet organic pineapples from the shop on the linked vid, Camden, North London UK.

Ami and myself were so surprised by the pineapple's very sweet, juicy, tasty, rich flavour.
We both agreed that it was the best pineapple we had ever eaten.
It reminded us of how food really tastes when it is cared for/grown in such a
natural environment as your farm at Finca La Virgen.

Thank you for what you are doing. Living here in the centre of London we
appreciate it ver much.

Many thanks.

Congratulations on growing organic pinapples, as opposed to poisonous pinapples (I found out anohther day by a TV documentary) full of pesticides also bad for the envirnment that are grown in other farms in Costa Rica and that are sold in many supermarkets in Portugal. Most people don't know that! stopped buying them! I found your pinnaples yesterday in a Biological Store, I bought one, it is tasty and natural. They are smaller and more expensive, but they are natural and healthy. Hope time they can become more available and people know the difference from pesticide fruit.

Congratulations on being a person that cares for what he is giving others to eat and who cares for the environement, with all the bilogical care you take with your farm, with the soil, etc. We need brave and caring people like you to change the earth to a wonderful planet that it could be and go against the poisoning of the environment with dangerous chemicals. Keep up with the good work and thank you! Teresa

Imagine, that I have never purchased a whole pineapple in my life. Only the ones in tin cans. I have recently become very enthusiastic about making green juices with a juice machine, so that is why I purchased one pineapple as a test. And it happened to be yours. From YouTube I saw instructions to peel a pineapple and I was amazed to taste the real taste of a pineapple. So thank you!

Pineapple greetings from Finland

Avatar Posted by Miska from Finland at Feb 09, 2016 09:44 AM
I bought your pineapple from Tampere, from one of the big department stores. It was my first time of buying an organic pineapple. I usually eat a lot organic vegs and try to find organic fruits, which are not too expensive for student / part time worker budget. Like I said, the pineapple from your farm was my first organic pineapple (the price was really good in Finland, where organic products are usually quite expensive), and it was really good.

It was fun to notice, that the taste was different than in the not organic pineapples I have eaten. More full bodied and flavoured.

There was also a hint of really nice round flavour in the pineapple flesh that makes me think "roasted nuts". I'm thinking might that be, because of the volcanic soils where you grow your pineapples? I work in a food store that carries some raw chocolates with some of them having cacao beans produced on volcanic soils, and it was funny/strange to notice that the pineapple grown in volcanic soil has similarities in taste/flavour with cacao grown in volcanic soil.

Have you noticed the same? I mean, when you eat the pineapple grown in your own farm, and compare it to pineapple grown somewhere else than in the volcanic soil?

Anyways, it was fun to notice, that other people from Finland are writing about the pineapples too!

And thanks for the volcanic pineapples! I adore the taste which I think is because of the soil!

I am also thinking of buying some normal pineapple and taste that at the same time with your pineapple if I can find one again in order to compare more fully the flavours. Could be fun to have "can you taste volcanic soil grown products" tasting party with friends. :) I think you can taste the volcanic products! And thanks for putting your info to the website, without it I would not have gotten the information of the soil, and would have just been wondering that why does this pineapple taste different than other pineapples, and yet so similar to some totally different things I have tasted :D.

I enjoyed reading about natureandmore - very best of luck and looking forward to buying more of your produce. Also brilliant to be able to trace the origin of the pineapple.!

Love the pineapples!

Avatar Posted by Caro Helsinki at Jan 03, 2016 01:44 PM
Hola Andrés!
I buy your pineapples in Finland and they are ALWAYS great, prices are quite good and the best thing is that the fruit taste all good (not only the bottom). I was told in my country, Chile that pineapples are ready to eat when you take the leaves from the center and they come out easily, so I always fallow this rule and it works (is there any other better method to choose?:) Sometimes when I buy the pineapples I have to wait few days at home before I eat them. Probably that's why some people are complaining about taste in some comments, they don't know when to eat them. Maybe you should include in the label a explanation how to know when they are ready to eat ;)
Maravilloso el proyecto, es muy lindo ver que estas cosas pasen en Latinoamerica :) Saludos!

moldy pinapple

Avatar Posted by Svenja Hannover at Dec 10, 2015 05:15 PM
Dear Mr. Barkholt,
I buy pinapples very rarely because all i see in the supermarket is pinapples with a little mold on the bottom. That seems to be normal because that is always what i find. Everytime i do buy it i am unsatisfied with the smell and the taste. It doesn't taste bad but it doesnt have a pinapple flavour. I bought one of your pinapples at an allnatura store in hannover yesterday and since all of them had moldy bottoms again i just picked the best looking one. But again it had no flavour and smelled funky. Why is that? Do the supermarkets store them wrong? They all look that way! Sincerly, Svenja

Avatar Posted by Editor Nature & More at Dec 22, 2015 05:23 PM

Unfortunately the pineapple I bought had a really bad taste. I like to support organic farming, and I like that you are asking for feedback. I bought a pineapple yesterday of yours, from a local Organic store. Today I cut open the pineapple and it smelled and tasted really bad. I can only describe the taste as being similar to glue or paint. It was so chemical that I threw the entire pineapple away.
I thought you should know this feedback.

Dear Ben,

first of all: thanks for your message - and happy belated birthday to you!
I am Jana from Nature & More and work closely together with our organic pineapple growers in Costa Rica - just like Andres! It's great to hear that you liked our pineapple. It's not only a really nice birthday gift for a 7-year-old boy. Because it grows organically without any chemicals, it's also good for the environment and the people who work on the pineapple farm. Thanks (also to your parents) for supporting and appreciating that!
Good question: how get the pineapples from Costa Rica to Munich. That is where we from Nature & More come into play. The pineapples travel by ship to the huge port of Rotterdam. That's pretty close to our company. As soon as a supermarket or food shop in Munich wants to order some of our tasty pineapples, we pack them and put them into a truck, which brings them to Munich. That's roughly how the pineapples end up in your hometown. Quite a long journey, isn't it?

I was so excited about finally finding an organic pineapple. But the fruit was regrettably colorless, tasteless, not juicy and...well... probably the poorest excuse for a pineapple i have had. It is very sad, since I really love pineapples and especially had high hopes for this ORGANIC fairtrade pineapple. But products like this drives consumers back to gmo-pesticide produce. I hope I have been unlucky, but the rest of the pineapples in the batch seemed similar. In deepest regret. N.A.

Dear Nimrod,
we are sorry to read about your negative experience with one of our organic pineapples. Please be assured that we do our best to guarantee highest quality standards regarding freshness, appearance, taste and shelf life for all products leaving our warehouse. Each incoming delivery is checked carefully by our quality control team to meet these criteria. But of course they cannot check every single fruit. As you also know, pineapples - and especially organically grown pineapples - are natural products with a natural variance. Lots of positive comments on this page as well as our own experiences prove that your story is not a general organic problem, but an exception. Once again: sorry for your bad pick. And please don't stop supporting gmo-pesticide-free organic food, cause it's really worth it!

Dear Andres
Thank you for growing organic produce. I like to buy them in a local health food store. How is agriculture developing in Central America? What do you think about the anti-abortion law in Costa Rica?
For decades I have treated the earth as a living organism. This implies protecting the soil and climate. This fall I plan a meeting that focuses on the climate and how it affects our lives. This requires a lot of active thinking because we can perceive the weather, but not the climate.
In winter we want to plan further activities so we are ready to address the leaders of businesses and governments before of the Paris summit in November 2015. As teacher I wonder how we can extend the UN decade of education on sustainability.
As economist I am also looking into how our economic system can become more sustainable. One idea is unconditional basic income. It can also help to protect the climate as some research has shown. If our struggle for live is less ferocious, we have more time to think about what we really need. We need less savings for the future because we know we will get the existential minimum whether we are young or old, ill or healthy, making money or not.
How can we work together all over the globe on such global issues? What are the best social conditions for organic agriculture?

Re: How it grows - Terhi's question

Avatar Posted by Jana from Nature & More, Waddinxveen/The Netherlands at Feb 04, 2015 03:58 PM
Dear Terhi,

thanks a lot for leaving a comment on! We are more than happy to read that you and your family enjoyed our organic pineapples! Asking where our food comes from is an important question you can't start soon enough to ask! Compliments to your smart little girl! Well, pineapples don't grow on trees (contrary to what many people think) - they grow on a leafy plant right out of the ground. The plant consists of stocky leaves whorled around a central stem. In a healthy pineapple plant, the tapered, swordlike leaves can grow up to 1,5 meters long! The pineapple fruit grows out of the top of the central stem. The fruit is actually the result of more than 100 individual fruit-producing flowers that have fused into a single fruit.
Even in the ideal climate of Costa Rica, it takes 14 to 18 months to harvest a full-grown pineapple fruit. And again 13 months to harvest a second time. Quite some time, right?
And one more interesting detail: pineapples are not grown from seeds - unlike most fruits - but from little side shoots along the stem.

Hope this helps to get a better impression!
All the best from Nature & More!

Chemicals used in pineapple production

Avatar Posted by Rob King, Bristol, UK at Feb 01, 2015 12:36 PM
I have recently bought one of your pineapples, which I bought because it was sold in a shop which only sells organic produce. I have recently heard very disturbing news about the mass production of pineapples in Costa Rica, however, involving the use of many chemicals which are now banned in the EU. I was born on a farm myself, and I have seen in this country how damaging intensive farming chemicals can be to health. I was wondering how far your farm is from the intensive farms which I gather are still using these chemicals in Costa Rica, and whether there is any danger of contamination of your land from their practices.

Got my first organic juicing box yesterday from Ocado. This morning I made an immune boosting smoothie with your pineapple, kale, banana, blueberries, ginger & lemon juice. Superb! I also sneaked a couple of chunks of your pineapple on the side. It was wonderfully fresh and zingy. Keep up the good work - knowing your farm is fair trade & is doing great conservation work, will keep me buying!

When I cut it, sweet flavor was so hypnic that I ate two pieces before I finish serving it. I am stil shaking how wonderful it was. Tomorow I must buy more of these miracles :)

I am so glad that we finally can buy organic-and-fairtrade pineapples in Sweden! I was in Costa Rica 2010 and saw some non organic banana farms. Not a nice experience. The problem is, I think, that people are not aware about how much "regular" fruit is sprayed with pesticides. If they knew this, I am sure they would make other choices at the supermercado. Thank you for your very sweet pineapples that I will keep buying.

Keep up the good work!

Best regards Cilla

Hello and greetings from Sweden! We just enjoyed a delicious pineapple from your farm - even though we are half a world apart. In a way it's crazy to ship fresh fruit all over the globe, but it also allows us up in usually cold Scandinavia to have a taste of ripe, exotic fruit.
Keep up the good organic and fair-trade work! Good luck!

Andres, like the most famous Wine in the World are growing on vulcanic soil, your Pineapples are getting most famous in the World for their taste too.
What is behind of all this, is the fact we know in research today in 2014: Our body needs all the minerals a plant can gather, to renew our cells every week, month and some every year. This minerals are the important building blocks in every new copy of every cell. More taste, means more minerals in the fruit or vegetables and more minerals means more buildingblocks to our braincells, heart, flesh, blood and bones. Minerals you only find enough in vulcanic soil...! For us today our Research in getting old, means just: by every copy of our cells - when we do not have enough minerals - we produce bad copies and next time more bad copy of the same cell. And this in fact means: We are getting old! Only this - nothing else! Strengthen our immunsystem with the right plants when ill, we can get over 120 years Andres! No joke! This is what it is all about.

So you help us all getting old - and getting a great Experience of taste every meal. And producing food for our Soul too.
And thinking Sustainable is more important for our Planet, than anything else.

You folks in lovely Costa Rica doing a real great Job and deserve the 'World Peaceprice' more then everybody else...!

We hope we could give you some insight from our Academy and research in the Art of Living.

My wife showed me this address after she noticed it is possible to contact the actual pineapple farm. This is a sign of service+++ so well done. I've already learnt a lot about how to keep the pineapple fresh (cold) and a lot about your processes. I read in the description the roots do not enjoy being waterlogged. Have you tried using Biochar ? Do you make good use of the pineapple residues to produce Biochar or composts ? I would. Think you could make very good organic compost and maybe using some of the volcanic minerals an organic fertiliser. Just some ideas on increasing yield and generating extra income. Now where's that juicy Pineapple ? Grilled glazed with Rum n sugar and served with homemade vanilla ice cream...Ummmmmmm !

The last one we bought at Biomarkt (originally one of the first organic supermarkets in town) and it's just as good as the previous ones (writing this as I'm enjoying it in an avocado-blueberry-mango-pineapple-smoothie with beepollen). Anywave, thanks for enriching the soil with love, reaping the fruits and sharing them with the world. Keep them coming!

Your pineapple

Avatar Posted by Helene, Bayonne, France at Dec 27, 2013 02:12 PM
Hi! We are very very environmentally friendly and involved in organic agriculture. Exceptionally, for Christmas, we bought an organic pineapple (we don't usually buy exotic fruits because of the environmental print due to transport). It was from your property. My partner, who works in organic agriculture here, thought (and I agreed) that it smelled and looked weird... BUT! IT WAS FANTASTIC! I often add honey to the pineapples we get here in France, because they lack in sugar and taste bland... But your pineapple didn't require anything but itself. We simply loved it! Thank you very much for this great gift, and also for all your efforts for the environment. Very kind regards, and may life bring you and your loved ones happiness, health and prosperity!

I had a wonderful visit to Finca Corsicana and was told that pineapples need to be kept cold until eaten. My whole foods, which sells Costa Rican pineapples (I hope from you). Doesn't do that. Are there guidelines? Thanks.

Avatar Posted by Michael Wilde at Dec 20, 2013 11:17 AM
Dear Carole,

my name is Michaël and I wor closely with Andres of Corsicana. Regarding your question, there are indeed guidelines for the cold storage of pineapples!
Finca Corsicana was right and the pineapple should be kept cold until eaten.
We of N&M work according to these guidelines until it gets into the hyper/supermarket.
Also Whole Foods should work according to these guidelines.
We only serve the European market and do not supply Whole Foods in your country.

For an exact explanation I advise to contact the Whole Foods manager in your city.

Best regards and thanks for your message

Diffference between bio and non bio pineapple

Avatar Posted by Prague Czech Republic at Dec 12, 2012 11:30 AM
Hallo Luis Carlos
thank you very much for your products.Your ananas is very juicy and sweet, but concerning the organic products i have one question.I understand difference between e.g. organic vegetables and non organic. But what is the difference between organic and non organic pineappel? Its because of the fertilizers or sprays? I wonder about this question because if I eat your products its perfect but if I buy just normal anans in the shop ihave a small troubles that my lips tingle me a lot.
So thanks for your farm and I wish you a lot of success.

answer: Difference between bio and non bio pinepple

Avatar Posted by Henk , Product Manager at Dec 17, 2012 06:06 PM
Dear Lubos Augusta,

Good news you like our Pineapples. Because the whole chain in doing their utmost for this ! 

I am Product Manager Organic Pineapple. The taste of the Pineapples is always a mix between brix (=sugar%) and ph (acid) of the Pineapple. If the Pineapple is harvested with a to little brix you will get this not nice feeling in your mouth if you eat a Pineapple. For a grower it very important to keep an eye on the brix. It is impossible to test all Pineapples on brix before but a good random test is vital. The N&M growers are specialists and understand this very well. The difference between organic and conventional pineapples is: That for a good organic pineapple we are obliged to take very good care on the soils, organically this is done by the use of compost. Because conventional Pineapple growers use chemical fertilizers soils often also turn acid. The reason that you as an consumer needs to pay a higher price for organic pineapples is because conventional growers can produce by only adding nutrition’s via the leaves of the Pineapple plant – leaves. Organic fruit needs healthy soils. Use of compost is also protection the soil against erosion. The ph of organic builded soil is always heaving a much better ph than soils treathed with chemical fertilizers. I hope this answer your question.

Chris - Thank you very much for your comments on our organic pineapple. As you must know to be able to grow and ship a pineapple half way around the world and make it you your home with that incredible taste many, many people had to make an effort . From the man who sowed the seed, to the woman who selected and packed each pineapple with care, to the shippers and handlers of the fruit all along the chain and many more in between. This is a group effort and everyone is important - that is the only way this is possible. We are very proud of what we produce and extremely happy
that you could enjoy it with pleasure.
