MAFA for example believe so strongly in education that they have included “investment in education” in their mission statement. This kind of investment includes in house training (both locally and internationally). The company is very much aware that it is through employees’ ‘growth’ that MAFA will be competitive in its business. The training also includes illiteracy training for the workers and career advancement training for its employees.

Illiteracy Education: In Egypt, there is a large number of workers in the agricultural field who can neither read nor write. Therefore, the committee agreed on elevating those workers education by using some of the Fair Trade premium in illiteracy training. The program was initiated in 2004 and since then a total of 121 has graduated. With the increasing awareness about the program among workers, the number of participants increases yearly.

Career Advancement Training (CAT): The joint body committee agreed on career advancement training for those employees who did not complete their education, those who are seeking higher education, or those who are looking for job related training. The committee is now accepting applications for those who are seeking any of these trainings.
