Hello, my name is Zongo Adama and I grow organic ánd fairtrade mangoes for Nature & More in Burkina Faso, Afrika. Thank you for buying our fruit!

I am the export manager here at Fruiteq, the exporting company. It was established in 2005 in order to give small mango producers from this country access to the European market. Today we work with five producer organizations representing 1200 farmers from 3 countries (Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast and Mali).

This area is one of the best places in the world to grow mango's. They grow everywhere, but of course not all the varieties are suitable for export. A typical organic mango is the Amelie variety, that has a distinctive citrus accent to the taste. Our mango farmers also cultivate cashew nuts, oranges and cereals. The mango is a forest product for us, which grows quite naturally.

At our warehouse (based near the town of Bobo-Dioulasso around 800 km from the coast) we collect, wash, sort and pack the mangoes. From there we transport them in a cooled container by train to the port of Abidjan (Ivory Coast)  from where they are shipped to Europe.

Because our fruit is fair trade, with your purchase you support several projects in the rural area's of our country. One of them is the purchase of equipment for schools and hospitals in the villages of Beregadougou, Ferkessedougou and Doussoudiana. Another is a project for improvements in sanitation and hygiene, including a special training program for women. Thank you for that!

How 'bout taste?

Brilliant quality Mango's you've got there! :D
Most of the regular Mango's sold here in the non-biological supermarkets are like stone, they almost break your teeth and taste like an old shoe.
You did just show what a real Mango's taste is.

Thanks for the great taste experience!

Last week I've eaten one of your mangoes and it was absolutately delicious.
I'm blessed to eat organic food since my mother started feeding us with it in 1976 which was pretty early. She was one of the pioneers in the region of Germany where I grew up.
It's wonderful to see how the organic food market is growing worldwide. It's really the best for all of us.
It's great that I can tell you that. This internet technology is amazing.

This way of connecting consumer to the growers like us is fantastic. It is like the way we sell our product locally. The local buyer of our mango know what he is buying, from who. We thatch face to face most of time together with the buyer .

my friend sells your delicious mangoes in her organic store, and it's there that I got to know them. These mangoes are among the best I've ever tasted, and I tried a lot! I eat them just like that, or mix them in a nice smoothie.
The small extra price compared to ordinary mangoes is money well spent! Every single human should be able to lead a decent life without being extortioned, and to earn a normal wage. Keep up the good work!

And I so love the idea of this website!

Dear Zongo, some minutes ago I have enjoyed your excellent fruit the more i eat the more I want ;-). Please have a look at http://permaculture.org.au/ and contact "Geoff Lawton" and ask him for the support tree for mango trees... I saw a permaculture lesson and Bill Mollison mentioned some special support tree. The lesson was about culture in India... I'm just a hobby gardener I'm not an expert, If you have time to read a book but not enough money to order I'll send you the Permaculture A Designers Manual (0-908228-01-5 http://www.tagari.com/) for free (English), just give me your adress. Thank you for your great work. God bless you all.

Thank you very much for your nice comment and support with lesson in permaculture. I am now very busy by sending to the market mango. When I get enough time, I will go trough this and will come back to you with question.
Thank you very much for offering me free the book, but at the price you are buying my fruit it is enough for me to buy book, to have my children in school. Just keeping buying our mango. We will always send you the best we have.

Avatar Posted by Michael from Germany at Apr 28, 2011 03:46 PM
Hello Zongo,
unfortunately the two unripe mangos I purchased from the local organic foods store here in Germany and let ripen for two or three days were mostly light brown inside. The few soft yellow parts were also sour and flavorless. I know that can happen sometimes... just wanted to let you know. I'll let you know if I get a good one.

Avatar Posted by Nick in UK at Apr 26, 2011 11:40 AM
Dear Zongo,
I want to write about Amelie on my website (www.goodfruitguide.co.uk), so wonder if you can help me with some information about Amelie? I would like to know the origin of the variety and where it is grown, but also the best way of telling when an Amelie mango is ready to eat (I had one this morning and although it had pale yellow skin and was quite soft, the flesh was a little spongy and acidic). My site is for encouraging British consumers to eat more fruit, and I think they would eat more mangoes if they knew about Amelie!
Regards,
Nick

Thank you for your excellent mangoes. I would like to see them more often in my usual shop.
My problem : your mangoes come to me with a slightly black flesh, probably because of a too cold storage. Could you remind on your packing-carboards, the minimal temperature (probably around 13°C) ?

Dear Zongo and colleagues,
We really enjoyed your delicious mango. We shared it one evening when my mother had come to stay with us. She never buys mangos herself so she was excited to eat it. We then really enjoyed finding out about where the mango had come from on the computer. My son, James, is very interested in Africa and also he is learning about different fruits and vegetables at school, so this was a great way to find out more about things that we eat, and where they come from. I'm afraid I am so ignorant that I had never even heard of Burkina Faso, so at least I have found out a bit about your country! Thank you again, and good luck to you all. Best wishes, Kathryn and James

Hi! We have just enjoyed the luxury of sharing a mango for breakfast. I found a sticker with your code on it. What a fun way to connect to the producer behind the product! Please give our very best regards to all the farmers who might have contributed to our tasty pleasure.

We travelled in Senegal Cassamance. They also grow mango's there. When I eat mango I feel myself in West Africa, esecially since today we have hot weather - which is rare in our wet and cold "frog country" as we call it.

Wishing you good health for yourself and your family! Have a great day and a good year!
