Kiwi

The kiwi came from China originally. But they got their common name from New-Zealand growers who noticed the similarity to the kiwi birds of New Zealand, which look brownish, hairy and round. Unlike the bird however, you can eat organic kiwi’s with the peel if you really want all the nutrition.

Some interesting facts about kiwis:

  • Kiwis were originally known as Yang Tao. They were brought to New Zealand from China by missionaries in the early 20th century with the first commercial plantings occuring several decades later. In 1960, they were renamed Chinese Gooseberries.
  • Eating 2 kiwis one hour before going to sleep may improve sleep onset, duration and efficiency in adults with self-reported sleep disturbances.
  • Kiwi plants can be male or female. One male plant can pollinate up to eight female plants.
  • Due to its low glycemic index, a kiwi does not rapidly raise blood glucose levels and can be eaten if you suffer from diabetes.
